Urtext Edition of Edvard Grieg's Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F Major, Op. 8, edited by Finn Benestad. Premiered at the Leipzig Gewandhaus in 1865, the printed edition of this sonata was published by C. F. Peters shortly after. The director of C. F. Peters at the time, Max Abraham, wrote to Grieg after a performance in 1879, saying "About this sonata we hear only unanimous praise; the whole world is enchanted by it...". In this first violin sonata Grieg demonstrates his talent for string writing and brings a freshness to the violin sonata form, taking inspiration from Norwegian folk music.
