Haydn, Joseph - The Seasons Hob XXI/3 (New Edition)
Catalogue No: EP11031
Words by Baron Gottfried van Swieten after J. Thomson's "The Seasons". Completed in 1801, first public performance on 24 April of that year. New Urtext Edition by Werner Seyfried. New English Translation by Margaret J.Boaden, in collaboration with Barbara H. Cook. New Piano Reduction by the editor based on the piano reduction by August Eberhard Müller (1802), authorized by Haydn.
Following the "Creation," Haydn's second major late work, the oratorio "The Seasons," is now available in a new edition as an urtext. The fact that this work has not quite reached the popularity of its predecessor may be due in no small part to the historical English text version, which is often felt to be inadequate in the English-speaking world. Therefore, the publisher and editor have decided to include, alongside the traditional German text, the new text version favoured by conductors like Roger Norrington, written by Margaret Boaden. For this edition, the original sources were consulted and taken into account.
