Composed of a “Prélude”, a “Sarabande” and a “Gigue”, the Sonatine (1950) makes reference to antique dance suites. The composer’s virtuosity, however, allows him to free himself elegantly from this apparently rigid framework. Although the Sonatine as a whole is marked by humour, in each movement Françaix puts his art at the service of a stylistic character.
