We enjoyed a visit to the Booth Centre this week to donate ten brand new ukuleles to the charitable day centre that supports homeless people in Manchester.

Helping homeless people through providing information, advice, opportunities & activities for building skills and confidence, the Booth Centre is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and was given Champion status by the department of Communities & Local Government in recognition of its pioneering work to reduce the number of rough sleepers in Manchester.

Through its 3-year Arts Council funded drama partnership with The Edge arts centre in Chorlton, who have given ukulele workshops for customers at Forsyths, the Booth Centre hopes to create its own sustainable and self-managed theatre company run by The Edge’s representatives, Artistic Director Janine Waters and Musical Director Simon Waters. Simon approached us for help with sourcing affordable ukuleles for the charity, and we were more than happy to donate ten brand new instruments to the Centre. Booth Centre visitors can now take advantage of the ukuleles with a new music class beginning in August which, it is planned, will eventually unite with the theatre company.

Booth Centre & Forsyth ukulele donation

We’re absolutely delighted that the ukuleles have gone to such a good home where they can provide lots of happy times. It's well documented that playing music promotes skills such as concentration, team work, discipline, confidence and self expression, as well as building confidence and self esteem. We wish the Booth Centre and The Edge every success with their projects.
