Mozart composed his azione teatrale in 1771 for the election of Count Colleredo as Archbishop of Salzburg. Metastasio's libretto is entirely beholden to the baroque theatrical tradition. Accordingly, Mozart's secco recitatives follow the baroque principle of chiaroscuro and contrast sharply with the arias. This “dream play” contains magnificent arias for all three roles: Scipio, Fortuna and Costanza.
