The name of Italian composer Franco Alfano is best known for his work in completing Giacomo Puccini's unfinished opera, Turandot. A contemporary of Respighi, he wrote several operas and chamber music with a style akin to the post-impressionist movement and neo-Classical approach. This Ricordi collection of Franco Alfano’s vocal chamber music constitutes a significant part of the Neapolitan composer’s output. The five transcriptions for cello and piano presented here are not only an opportunity for cellists to try their hand at a musical form not originally intended for their instrument but are also designed to contribute to the rediscovery and revalorisation of the historical and musical significance of one of the most representative figures ‘tout court’ of Italy in the twentieth century.
