The Mass settings form the largest section in the fifth and last volume of the series Breitkopf & Härtel Choir Library for Mixed Choir – Sacred Repertoire. Two single movements are followed by seven complete masses, all of which can be performed without accompaniment, as it was usual in the Renaissance and early Baroque. The masses by Johann Nepomuk David and Hugo Distler take recourse to these eras while also setting the Ordinary in the German language. The second section contains additional liturgical chants such as the Lord’s Prayer, confessions of faith, litanies and responsories while the third section focuses on the Gospel of the New Testament. The volume is concluded with three sacred concertos by Dmitry Bortniansky in Russian, provided here with a transcription and a German translation.
