Gardiner was a noted British composer of the late Victorian, early 20th Century era and was a member of the Frankfurt Group of composers. His most widely familiar composition, Shepherd Fennel’s Dance, was written in 1911 and inspired by Thomas Hardy’s short story The Three Strangers.
