The Slumber Scene by Elgar, is from his Wand of Youth suite and is the sixth of seven pieces in what became his first suite. As a boy Elgar composed some tunes for use in a play staged by the young members of the Elgar family. He noted the tunes down in a sketchbook and in 1907, four decades later, he arranged the music as the two Wand of Youth suites. It was first performed at the Queen's Hall, London on 14th December 1907, conducted by Henry Wood. This arrangement of Slumber Scene is scored for 4 trombones, to be played in a lyrical fashion. The parts change over the lead and interweave as indicated on the parts. It should be played at a moderate pace and not too slowly. PSTJ Smith
