This three movement suite for horn and piano was composed over Easter 2021, with the second movement adapting an occasional piece originally composed for ‘cello and piano in 2014. The ABC movement titles reflect the musical moods of each movement. ‘Agitation’ begins with a heroic introduction, with the faster, agitated music that follows adopting sounds familiar from many edgier film scores. ‘Benediction’ opens with a lilting echo of the first movement’s introduction, but the principal mood of the movement is one of gentle thankfulness and lyricism. The celebratory style of final movement owes much to its reflection of a range of syncopated, jazz and ragtime styles, rounding off the Triptyque in an upbeat style as two of the movement’s principal themes interweave in the final section.
