Silver Headjoint
The headjoint is the most important part of the flute as it is where the sound originates. Certain playing techniques and tone colours can only be achieved through the addition of precious metal to your instrument. It is this silver content that helps naturally produce a superior sound quality, perfect for adding a new range of tonal characteristics to your playing.
Key Mechanism
The French-style pointed key arms which were traditionally reserved for much more expensive flutes. French-style pointed key arms feature an arm that extends to the centre of the key and helps to strengthen the mechanism, making for a stronger and tighter key placement, which means no leaks and squeaks. These key arms also result in excellent note intonation, reward speedy playing, and aid the development of faster techniques.
Open Hole Keys
The use of open holes on this model encourages proper hand position and, when you're ready, also allows you to begin using advanced performance techniques including microtones, multiphonics, note bends, and glissandi. There is also a difference in the weight of the instrument and while some would consider it negligible, it can be argued that the lighter instrument, the more the metal is allowed to resonate. Don't worry if you're not ready for open holes just yet - this instrument comes with rubber plugs that can be inserted into the keys and then removed once you're more confident.
Inline G vs Offset G
For many years, inline G was perceived as “professional” while offset G was associated with “student” flutes. While these stereotypes no longer exist, there is still some debate over which design is superior. Although inline G and offset G are the same acoustically, inline G may be the best choice for players with longer fingers or larger hands with adequate strength and control. However, an ever-increasing number of players are now choosing professional flutes with offset G because of the more natural hand position it provides. Inline G flutes don't always include a split E arm as the combination of these two mechanisms have a tendency to bind more easily.
Silver Plated Beauty That Lasts
Like all TJ flutes, the Chanson range has a triple plated finish on the tubing. To ensure that the sliver-plating last a lifetime, Trevor James developed their own method of coating flutes. After much research they discovered that by copper-plating the nickel tubing first, the subsequent two layers of silver-plate are rock solid, giving you the most durable finish of any step-up flute.
