The Rickenbacker 4000 series basses have endured, almost unadulterated in design, since their initial introduction to the product line in 1961.
The 4003, First introduced in 1979, in an effort to have the 4000 series basses more resilient to the increased tension of the what were becoming the ever more popular round wound strings. See the 4003 as a reinforced, reassessment of the original 4001 pattern.
Since then they have been Rickenbacker's flagship electric bass, and for good reason! The unique tonal characteristics, usually defined as the characteristic Ricke 'Honk', has drawn a star studded list of 4000 series patrons over the years! From Macca to Lemmy, the versatility of the Rick bass can cover all bases (If you'll pardon the pun).
