Knights On The Castle (Kevin Houben The opening of this work reveals the gigantic grey walls of a castle that seems to rise up. Solos by the horn and trumpet express the imposing appearance of the castle from the outside. Subsequently, the composition gives us a glimpse inside the castle walls. A firm rhythmic base represents the combativeness of the knights who defend the castle against the threat of enemies from outside. The catchy, playful melodies in this part refer not only to the knights’ willpower, but also to the friendship and sense of invincibility that reigns within the castle walls. Fata Morgana (Filip Ceunen) This piece has been specially composed for novice musicians who take pleasure in creating music together. With the choice of the title and the use of the Eastern scale, you are immediately transported to the desert. Beautiful melodies and vibrant rhythmic accompaniments, in which percussion plays a prominent role, turn this composition into an engaging challenge for every musician. Adrift At Sea (Roel Laethem) On November 23rd 1942 Poon Lim was a sailor on a British warship crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was on its way to New York, when suddenly the crew heard two blasts and felt heavy shocks. A German U-boat had intercepted them and launched two torpedoes. The ship started sinking 400 kilometres from the nearest land… Poon Lim was the only survivor. He clung to a life raft equipped with food, water, a flashlight and two emergency flares. He survived thanks to the stock, but soon he ran out of both food and drinking water. In order to get food and to stay alive, he crafted improvised fishing hooks and a water reservoir. With every passing day his situation grew more precarious. Several times he lost his hard-earned rations due to hungry sharks or heavy storms. On April 5th 1943, after no less than 133 days alone at sea, Lim was floating around near Belém, a Brazilian coastal town. There he was seen by three fishermen who brought him ashore. Nowadays Poon Lim remains to be the man who has survived alone on a raft at sea for the longest time. Adrift At Sea tells the story of Poon Lim in three movements. The first movement narrates about the U-boat which sinks the warship and forces Lim into his survival on the raft. In the second movement the raft is presented in two ways: as the last resort that gives him a chance on survival, but also as a very perilous vessel to spend 133 days at sea. In the third movement the samba rhythm represents the Brazilian fishermen who brought Lim to shore. The lyrical theme symbolises the heroism of his adventure.
