The Schimmel Glass Grand is truly spectacular and is the original Glass grand. Made from plexiglass, the same material used in bulletproof windows, the case is very strong and heavy. A 7ft Glass grand weighs the same as a full-size 9-foot Concert grand. It is available in a number of options with and without internal lighting and with the acoustic body in different finishes.
Originally created in 1951 by Arno Schimmel the Glass grands design was updated, refined and relaunched in the 1980's by Mr Nikolaus Schimmel. The glass grand was Initially conceived as a show-stopping piano for stage use where the lid could be raised without obscuring musicians and objects that might be behind the piano. The Glass grand has also been developed since its re-introduction and has gone through 205, 208 and now 213 model iterations. The dense plexiglass material does influence the sound of the instrument and glass grands have a particularly strong bass.
Options for the piano include the Body in white complete with white frame and soundboard. This can be particularly effective on stage where the piano reflects the colour of the stage lighting appearing to change colour.
The Body in black is often accompanied with a gold frame and natural colour soundboard. As Standard, all the metal parts are gold plated however these can be chromed by request.
Dimmable Internal lighting is an option that enables the instrument to glow from its edges as seen in the video below:-
Our Images show the piano with white and black acoustic bodies, on stage with Lenny Kravitz and Ray Charles as well as on board a Super Yacht.
The Schimmel Glass grand piano is completely customisable and has many options, including those mentioned above. The most popular option is to have a self-playing automation system fitted, such as the Glass grand as featured in the Trafford Centre, Manchester, which has the QRSPNOmation III system fitted.
These pianos are also available with Schimmels own TwinTone™ silent system, allowing for silent piano practise with headphones. We know that all pianos are complete individuals and the exciting part of their new TwinTone™ system is that it can now be retrofitted in our own workshop for an additional £500 on the usual TwinTone™ price! You can read the specifications on their new TwinTone™ silent system through the link above.
There are also options to have the instrument self-playing. Please enquire with the piano department for further information
