The wounded Arrigo returns from the wars to find that his love, Lida, has married Rolando in the former's absence. Federico invades Italy and Arrigo joins the Knights of Death who swear to die before letting the Emperor take Milan. Rolando discovers his wife as she tries to dissuade Arrigo from his course and the jealous husband renounces the pair. In the battle (May 29, 1176) Arrigo slays Federico but is himself mortally wounded. His dying words swear Lida's honour and faithfulness to Rolando.
