In the mid 1500s, an Incan tribe leader, Zamoro, finds that his beloved, Alzira (daughter of Ataliba, overlord of the Incas) has been abducted by Gusmano, the Christian governor of Peru. Gusmano is suing for peace but wants Alzira for himself. Zamoro is captured and Alzira offers herself to Gusmano in return for her lover's release. Zamoro goes to the marriage ceremony in disguise and kills the governor.
