Carl Philipp Emanuel's organ sonatas are still overshadowed by their "overpowering" father. Forkel, for example, wrote almost apologetically: "These organ solos were made for a princess who could not play a pedal and had no difficulties, even if she had a beautiful organ made with two keyboards and a pedal and liked to play it." Since the princess , meaning Anna Amalia v. Prussia, but not just a manualiter positive, but had a large organ with pedal built, Forkel's frequently quoted anecdotal note must be viewed with a certain skepticism: is it perhaps an attempt by Forkel, who is artistically quite fixated on J. S. Bach, for the to find an excuse for the lack of pedals in the sonatas of C. Ph. E. Bach, which he certainly felt to be a deficiency? The actual reason for doing without the pedal is probably due to the change in style towards the early classic period. It is the musical qualities that are why the organ sonatas by the famous Bach son are still played a lot and with pleasure today. The 6 authentic organ sonatas are presented in a new critical edition, which for the first time takes into account the entire diverse source tradition.
