Composed for Double Bass 2000, Portfolio is a suite of five short pieces for the good beginner bassist and each is based on a modern work of art. There are musical and technical challenges for the younger player with a simple and effective piano accompaniment. The style is modern but tonally accessible. These are simple, lovely works that are not scripted by any bass method, but which will present the early student with simple and rewarding musical challenges. [Double Bassist] [Interior - after Edouard Vuillard Grade 4 Trinity-Guildhall 2010 onwards / Self Portrait - after Francis Bacon - Grade 5 Trinity-Guildhall 2010 onwards]. Performance Level: 4:5:6. ...Portfolio was given its premiere in 2003 at the 5th Wells Double Bass Workshop. The movements are all short, setting a scene or mood inspired by memories of paintings by Bacon, Miro, Vuillard, Morandi and Braque. The bass part uses a variety of techniques: col legno, pizzicato, glissandi and arco. There are some interesting rhythms and textures. If a pupil has enjoyed the Boaden Petite Suite then they may enjoy these a year or so later... [ESTA - News & Views] Portfolio is another welcome Recital Music project by John Alexander, a composer from Sussex, UK, who has 10 other bass pieces to his credit. The work is a collection of five miniatures based on Alexanders impressions of specific paintings by five artists of the 20th-century: Francis Bacon, Joan Miro, Edouard Vuillard, Giorgio Morandi and Georges Braque. They do not mimic the pictures themselves, but rather the visual method used to make their statements. The results are some specific performance instructions (Joan Miros Landscape is described as fairly slow with an aridity almost bereft of expression) as well as some picturesque musical moments that are engaging for the performer and listener. This collection is meant for a second or third year student with rhythmic knowledge of simple and compound metre, syncopation, accidentals, and a range of notes extending from the open E string to the first D on the G string. The elementary piano part can be played easily by any accompanist, a welcome relief for the pianist who must perform with dozens of students on one studio recital. The student explores col legno battuto, tratto, glissandi and pizzicati as alternative sounds, all of which successfully serve the interests of the piece. These are simple, lovely works that are not scripted by any bass method, but which will present the early student with simple and rewarding musical challenges. [Double Bassist]
