Hymns and Carols are the two main sources for the melodies that are associated with traditional Christmas music. While hymns are predominately sacred, the historical roots of carols are in religious and pagan folk music and dance. The latter association with pagan music and dance has throughout history brought carols alternatively in and out of favor with Christmas worship. Fortunately, interest in Christmas music grew in the 20th century, and has led to the popularity it presently enjoys. Angels We Have Heard On High, a popular Christmas song, is likely a traditional French carol. The lyrics refer to the Gospel of Luke’s account of the birth of Christ. In that rendition, shepherds note that the newborn child is surrounded by a chorus of angels. The chorus of Angels We Have Heard On High features a memorable cascading effect of notes on the text “Gloria in Excelsis Deo”, Latin for “Glory to God in the highest”.
