With her Suite for flute and piano, the young Frenchwoman Clémence de Grandval established herself as a major French composer of the 19th century. As piano and composition student of Frédéric Chopin and Camille Saint-Saëns, she understood the musical trends of her time and was an active member of the new French school La Société Nationale de Musique. The Suite for flute and piano is a typical work of French Romanticism. Influences of Chopin's piano music are clearly noticeable especially in the lyrical entry of the piano in the Prélude and in the virtuoso Final.
