The 7 art songs for tenor collected together in the present volume make up part of the Canzoniere op. 17 by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, which, after the first edition of 1936, Ricordi’s re-published with a preface by the soprano Gemma Bertagnolli. This work bears witness to the quality of Italian chamber compositions in the first half of the twentieth century and, besides enlarging the concert repertoire for singers, will be found an invaluable didactic work – in particular for courses in music for voice and piano – in music schools and academies.
