Seven Pint-Sized Pieces may be performed complete as a seven movement work. Each piece may also be performed separately or a selection together in any combination. The set opens with Nostalgia, an emotionally charged piece with generous dramatic gestures. A Merry Jaunt changes register, with playful leaps and virtuosic runs. Song Without Words is a fluid, bluesy melody with a delicate lilt. Vlad's Vamp packs seven short variations on a poignant jazzy rhythm that leaves you with an ear-worm. A Birthday Chorale illuminates lyricism with unusual combinations and voicing between the two instruments and Hilary's Hoedown puts a penultimate flamboyant end to the set. Hilary’s Hoedown was commissioned by Hilary Hahn as part of the Encores project, 2010. First performed on 11 September 2012 by Hilary Hahn at Teatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Cleethorpes Chorale was commissioned by London Music Masters for Many Voices, a collection of new violin and piano works for young people, in the charity’s 10th Anniversary year. World premiere of Six Pint-Sized Pieces (pieces 1 – 6) was on 10 June 2017 by Vlad Maistorovici (violin) and Diana Ionescu (piano) at the Multicultural Centre of the Transylvania University, Brasov, Romania.
