Etudes expressives Vol.1 by Damien Guille contains 11 original studies for beginner pianists. From Baroque writing to film music, it's not always easy for the teacher to reconcile pedagogical interest and musical fulfillment, especially for students taking up the piano a little late. Certain pieces from the classical repertoire are of course indispensable, and their pedagogical value is beyond question. However, to maintain motivation, it's always a good idea to alternate work on these serious pieces with more modern musical styles, less familiar to the already well-influenced ears of most young instrumentalists. The language of these expressive Etudes remains deliberately tonal and modal, sometimes flirting with dissonances and using varied modulations. It is influenced not only by the author's own sensibilities, but also by his sharing of music from video games and manga with his students.
