Aram Khachaturian wrote this brilliant piano sonatina for the pupils of the elementary school for music in Prokopyevsk. This can be seen, for example, in the rather moderate technical demands, although the piece's humorous and lyrical passages make it an effective work for the concert repertoire. The classical opening movement presents the sonata form in all its boldness, while the slow movement turns out to be a fresh interpretation of a pastoral lullaby. The extensive finale, full of virtuoso refinements, is particularly striking with its coda and is reminiscent of the music of Francis Poulenc.
