The Strathclyde Motets are communion motets setting propers of the mass for various Sundays and feasts. The Latin text is taken from the Graduale Romanum. The pieces are suitable for intermediate standard choirs. In splendoribus sanctorum is a communion motet for Nativity Midnight Mass (Psalm 109: 3).The obbligato trumpet (or organ) performs completely independently of the choir. The four obbligato passages are cued by the conductor during the first singing of the motet. During subsequent repetitions the trumpeter (organist) may vary the obbligato passages by jumping from line to line or from phrase to phrase ad libitum, ending the piece alone with cadential figures from any of the four passages.
