Edmund Jolliffe’s setting of the communion antiphon for the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass may be sung to equally powerful effect either liturgically, or as the focus of a collective expression of remembrance, or as a moving addition to any choral concert programme. From the opening revelation of eternal light the music moves steadily through hushed litanies and invocations to a resounding climax. A contemporary tonality of richly annotated chords illuminates these traditional words with a modern sound and sense. This is a piece that singers will enjoy for its discipline of sustained lines and beautifully balanced sonorities no less than for its eloquent statement of an eternal hope.
