Most of this material was written over the Christmas period of 2016. Each of the Scherzos features a brace of ideas. The first contrasts movement in fourths with a more insinuating second idea characterised by a rising fifth. The Jewish-sounding Second Scherzo is a dance like movement with a more rhetorical (even cantorial) middle section whilst principal aspects of the final section are a fugato passage and a march. The lullaby is predicated as a Sicilliano. Further description would be otiose as the piece is designed by the composer to expand a limited repertoire and, as the subtitle makes clear, to divert. Note to the soloist: straight and cup mutes are required for this piece.
