Hubert Harry (1927-2010), born in Dalton-in-Furness, a child prodigy, studied in Manchester from 1935-1946. He continued his studies under Edwin Fischer and Dinu Lipatti in Switzerland, where he was awarded international prizes and began a successful career as a concert pianist. Friendship with the Rachmaninoff family and a growing circle of students encouraged him to stay in Lucerne. Why he chose to teach instead of following what looked like a promising international career as a soloist is one of the themes taken up in his biography: "Hubert Harry: Pianist - Fragments of a Life"
