A series of books for solo brass/woodwind instrument and piano. Each colourful collection is different, and comprises an eclectic set of arrangements of well-known (and not so well-known) jazz standards and original pieces that are fun to play. The selection of tunes covers the evergreen Getting Sentimental Over You and Autumn Leaves to Fats Wallers Aint Misbehavin. What is welcome is the programme note provided for all pieces which gives a brief history/historical context and, rather refreshingly, explains the form of the piece and touches on circle of fifths and chord symbols. The young player will find that although the range covers low F to high Ab it goes there only briefly. Although the range suggests Grades 4-6 I suspect the Grade 4 player might be stretched a little too much to get full benefit from the selection whereas the good Grade 5 or 6 player will be able to turn on the style for concerts and enjoy the pieces more."
