From the rich legacy of Medieval music, only a few of the one-part dances recorded as simple melodic lines have been preserved. In this album, some of them have been transposed to accommodate the range of the soprano recorder and, in accordance with historical illustrations, supplemented with a rhythmic accompaniment of the side drum or other percussion instruments whose presence was indispensable in the dance music of that period. It is necessary for performers to apply a brisk tempo to all compositions: only with Royal Estampidas may the tempo be a rather moderate one. As the scoring of these pieces is by no means definitive, it is possible to play them on various wind and string instruments.
