The three books are published separately, although the author firmly believed that melodic movement and harmonic progression should always be studied side by side. Book 1 concentrates on single-line ‘horizontal’ writing. The books employ exercises in counterpoint, in figured-bass harmony and in the roman-numeral inversion analysis.
