These capriccios, in every major key, should be in the collection of every conservatoire student. They offer effective musical and technical challenges throughout the range of the instrument. Traditional and tonal, brimming with energy, spirit and character, they exemplify the excellent unaccompanied music by this important Czech bassist-composer. Miloslav Gajdos has composed and arranged well over 150 works for double bass and is one of the most active and respected bassists in the Czech Republic today. He writes in a traditional style, offering musical and technical challenges in equal measure. He has written for every level of bassists - from one to sixteen players - and is one of Recital Musics Featured Composers. Miloslav Gajdos is one of Europes most active and prolific double bass composers and was Recital Musics featured composer in 2007 when these capriccios were first published. They are in a traditional style, quite virtuosic and cover all the major keys. Mr Gajdos believes that In order to become a virtuoso on any instrument the player has to master many skills and have the ability to play in any key. He cites Bachs 48 Preludes and Fugues and while I would not wish to make comparisons, these pieces will certainly stretch the technical and musical capabilities of any player. The 12 capriccios explore every conceivable technique from normal pizzicato to pizzicato accompanying an arco melody: natural and artificial harmonics: chords, double stops, glissandi, tremolo, ponticello and so on. Some of the pieces require high technical skills but always have the emphasis on musicality to give the performer an opportunity to enjoy the music at its best (M.Gajdos).
