The Ten Choral Overtures for the organ is written as a work for liturgical purposes, but can also be performed as a concert piece. The composers initial purpose for writing this work was dictated by certain technically limited demands so an untrained organist could also perform the composition. The themes to each overture are taken from the Bohemian Brethren chorals: their original sound appears as short, several intonation beats, which precede each overture.
