Porgy and Bess was envisioned as an "American folk opera" by composer George Gershwin and thats precisely what it was: a uniquely American tale about African-American lovers in the slums of South Carolina. First performed in 1935, it features a libretto by DuBose Heyward and music by George and Ira Gershwin. Sing fourteen songs from the outstanding musical, including Summertime, the shows most enduring song.
