Showboat

When Show Boat first came to Broadway in 1927, it broke new ground for musical theatre. It was a major departure from the typical Broadway musicals of the day, which, up to that point, had mostly been light comedies that were not particularly story-driven. Show Boat set the standard for the "book musical," wherein the music, dialogue and story are all carefully integrated to form a complete artistic entity. The production has endured for decades, with numerous Broadway revivals and continued popualiry in regional theatre groups.
