Forsyths - The Complete Music Shop

Other Makers Acoustic Guitars

Whilst the website is growing every day with new additions, we still have a large range of instruments which have yet to grace these pages. In addition to the brands with their own sections on the website, Forsyths are main dealers for the following brands:

Crafter

One of our longest running brands, Crafter are simply unbeatable value for money whether for a beginner or a serious player on a tight budget. The new solid topped Lite (£159) and HiLite (£179) series have instantly become our best selling guitars.

Aria

Aria have been making excellent instruments at all ends of the market, from the cracking entry level AW-20 (£99) acoustic to sumptuous D’Aquisto branded jazz guitars (£3000 +). We generally have a couple of dozen Aria models covering acoustic, electric and folk instruments but as a starting point check out the Sandpiper range of electro-acoustics, and the lovely, Martin inspired AD models.

Godin

Ok, where to start? Robert Godin must be the hardest working man in the industry, managing numerous brands and factories around the Quebec area in Canada. The Simon & Patrick and Seagull brands, made side by side on the same production line, follow the same basic construction but with distinctly neck profiles, the S & P having a fairly standard modern nut width and profile whilst the Seagull is wider and deeper. Art & Luthierie are officially the budget range, but the cost cutting is limited to cosmetic detail and, whilst a little dowdier to look at, they’ll happily give their siblings a run for their money in the tone department.

Dell Arte, Loar and Recording King

Part of the AXL family of brands, these are speciality instruments made to a high standard in the Far East. Dell Arte have their roots in a boutique brand of Gypsy Jazz guitars from the US, and are fine examples of the Django guitar on a reasonable budget. Loar take their name from the ’20s Gibson genius Lloyd Loar, the man responsible for the L-5 jazz guitar and F-5 mandolin, and offer great instruments of the arched variety. Recording King is another old US name, and we currently carry several of their fine resonator instruments (mandolins and ukes too!)

And the rest…

Whilst we try to represent a healthy selection of instruments from each of the brands we carry, when other companies offer us something particularly unusual or impress we just can’t seem to say no. The current selection are shown below.

Oahu 1930s Hawaiian Parlour Guitar Front Oahu 1930s Hawaiian Parlour Guitar Back

Oahu 1930s Hawaiian Parlour

Oahu 1930s Hawaiian Parlour

Oahu were a major US publishing house capitalising on the huge popularity of Hawaiian lap steel guitar playing, supplying guitars primarily in a package with tutor courses. Their instruments were built by a number of Chicago manufacturers, primarily Regal, Harmony and Stromberg – Voisinet; and whilst we can’t swear to it we’re inclined towards Regal for this particular one. Many of Oahu’s instruments were made as square necked lap guitars, but for those who couldn’t make their mind up which way to hold the guitar they also supplied round necked models with metal nut adaptors to raise the action to suit lap playing. Ours is one such example, and still has its nut raiser tucked away in the case should you fancy going Hawaiian. It’s made of solid Mahogany throughout, and is surprisingly loud and full sounding with slide and fingers alike. It’s in very good condition for its age. There’s a tendency for transverse braced guitars to develop a distortion of the soundboard around the bridge, and there’s a small hump behind the bridge of this one, but all perfectly stable and not particularly noticable. There’s also one small repaired back crack. A period correct case is supplied.
